The Critical Environment Lead  in the Ashburn/Dulles, VA area will lead teams for all aspects of operations for low and medium voltage plants along with maintenance and repair of all Electrical and Critical Power Systems and Associated Process Systems. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of the mechanical systems at Quality Technology Services. This leader must have some experience with all aspects of but not limited to: electrical circuitry, electric controls, switch gear controls, UPS systems, UPS system batteries, emergency power generators, automatic transfer switches, running conduit, pulling wire and cable, calculating electrical loads, electric metering and monitoring, in-depth knowledge of codes, regulations and all required and applied safety standards and practices. This role will lead teams and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on all electrical and mechanical equipment and assist in other facilities-related processes, including but not limited to maintenance, the development and implementation of procedures, and emergency response. This role will work with the Critical Environment Manager to develop metrics that show the performance of the electrical and mechanical systems, and will regularly submit reports on these indicators. This role is responsible for team lead responsibilities potentially on the FAC and DCO areas of operations.



This role will be be scheduled to work Monday- Friday during business hours.  Occassional weekends or evenings may also be required due to the needs of the business.






RESPONSIBILITIES, other duties may be assigned

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES: (not an all inclusive list)


  • Monitor and control daily service ticket activity, customer calls, and service levels
  • Exceptional customer service
  • Resolving technical problems with hardware, software and connectivity.
  • Email management
  • Ability to manage complex situations during off management hours - single point of contact.
  • Troubleshooting & resolving customer issues while maintaining agreed upon service levels for customer contracts
  • Perform miscellaneous warehouse related tasks
  • Adhering to documented policies, procedures and processes both QTS internal and customer specific
  • Continuous improvement of service delivery
  • Continually maintain data integrity
  • Record, manage, and maintain an accurate physical hardware inventory
  • Perform physical hardware audits/hardware warranty / RMA requests
  • Coordinate deliveries and transport requests/physical material packaging and shipping
  • Maintain order to cash inventory levels
  • Manage and perform all critical and non-critical processes/maintenances and participate in predictive maintenances
  • Manage third party vendors within the data center to ensure compliancy, specifications and quality standards
  • Perform and execute necessary rounds throughout Data center as directed


 TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: (not an all inclusive list)


  • Mechanical theory - central plant, centrifugal, chilled water, boilers.
  • Air distribution equipment, including air handlers, CAHU, CRAC, and Package units, heat pumps
  • Skills - chiller systems 100 to 2500 tons, CRAC’S 20-60 tons and package split systems 2-100 tons
  • Skills - valves, variable speed equipment, dehumidification, compressors, condensers, coils, bearings, drives, gears
  • Skills - refrigeration, pressure gauges, vacuum pumps, reclaim units, piping
  • Water systems infrastructure - thermal storage, pumps, valves
  • Skills - water treatment, cooling towers, water filtration systems
  • Control systems - BMS, VAVs, controllers
  • Emergency system infrastructure/procedures (EOP), mock drills and adherence
  • Computerize Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Inventory management - including shop maintenance, inventory controls
  • BAS/BMS product software
  • Troubleshooting
  • Asset management
  • Critical work efforts/Construction - oversee and assist with construction
  • Technical writing - customer process documents
  • Perform MOPs
  • Ensure that infrastructure is compliant with government regulations and operational guidelines/current all necessary licenses, permits and certifications required by QTS procedures
  • Use comparative and analytical skills to benchmark best practices in electrical and mechanical systems. (Trending electrical data)
  • Electrical distribution system (single line drawings)
  • Skills - arch flash, grounding, voltage, amps, and KW
  • Branch circuit monitoring and load balance management
  • Generators and ATS’s /UPS systems
  • Circuit installation, includes conduit, wire pulling, termination and metering
  • Distribution power monitoring software



  • Associates degree in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Military Schooling, or 10+ years of related work experience.
  • Four or more years of data center experience or equivalent
  • Completion of an apprenticeship level subject area (QTS internal or tech school training): Electrical, Mechanical, in addition to CPR & AED.
  • Certifications Required: (Or equivalent education / certification)  -- if not completed at time of application, must complete in new role within 6-12 months

  • CE Technician I & II Certifications 
  •  CE Technician III Certifications
    • o Journeyman or QTS CET Level I, II, & III
      o A+/ Server+/Network+
      o Microsoft Certification MCP/Bicsi Installer I


  •  Six or more years of data center experience or equivalent
  • CE Lead Tech, Optional Certifications:

    o All certifications required for CE Specialist, plus the following:

    o DCIM


  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interface with all levels of the organization
  • Exceptional customer service/team oriented/problem solving/priority setting/results oriented/personal accountability
  • Ability to analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions and take corrective action as required
  • Ability to manage complex situations during off management hours - single point of contact
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to function in a team environment
  • The ability to pass job-related skills assessments based on pre-determined scoring criteria and time frames.
  • The ability to acquire and apply job-related knowledge within set guidelines and expectations.
  • Position may involve frequent typing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching and lifting.  Lifting requirements may range from <10 lbs. - 50 lbs. on a regular basis, with heavier weights done in conjunction with other individuals or lifting aids.
